Reflections on Social Media - Brian Clemens

My friend, Brian Clemens, gave me some great praise on being "ahead of the curve".  I'm not sure if this is entirely true, or if I just fall ass-backwards into things (or jump on bandwagons), but I appreciate the compliments!  Brian wrote on Twitter's effects on relationships and conversations from Joe Johnston's presentation on social media.  See below, and more after the jump...

I really don’t understand this whole concept of social media, or what it is or claims to be. All I know is in 2010 I fell more and more dependent on it. In 2009 I attended a presentation by Joe Johnston on “Social Media and the Third Place”. I had heard most of his presentation before in books or other gleanings about the third place, however there was one thing that stood out above all else he talked about. That very thing is, twitter. We’ll pick up the story of Joe’s thoughts on twitter in just a minute.

Twitter? Twit what? I was first introduced to twitter in late 2007 from my friend Joshua Seek. He raved about it and told me it was going to be the next biggest thing to connect people, perhaps as big as facebook. I always knew Josh to be a smart, cutting edge type of guy but when he introduced me to the twitter platform I was quite underwhelmed. I remember thinking to myself, “where can I post a link or create photo albums?” It had a very clean and minimal design as Josh would say. To me it looked like a college student’s communication experiment. Josh was kind enough to create me a personal account and an account for the coffee shop I was managing. A failure on my part, I never touched these accounts as I felt the entire network was in infancy stage and needed to grow up and show itself to be applicable.

Fast forward to fall 2009, sitting in this lunch time presentation with Joe Johnston I learn how he is connecting with people through twitter. He had a personal account plus he helped begin accounts for three restaurant businesses he is a partner in. As I can’t find my notes from that meeting, two major things stuck with me that day...
